Episode 3 looks at the harmful practice of service restriction — kicking residents out of the shelter for a rules infraction. While they are supposed to be a last resort to deal with situations where residents or staff are at risk of harm, many service restrictions are given for minor sometimes made up reasons, under false accusations, or a ‘client’ is deemed difficult or speaks back to staff. Shelter residents give accounts of their experiences being service restricted.
